Dietetics & Nutrition

A dietitian is an expert in food and nutrition. Dietitians help promote good health through proper eating. They supervise the preparation and service of food, develop modified diets, participate in research, and educate individuals and groups on good nutritional habits.

The term "nutritionist" is also widely used. People may call themselves nutritionists without the educational and professional requirements of registered dietitians. Sometimes a dietitian will first train as a nutritionist.

A dietitian will look at ensuring your diet has all your required vitamins and minerals, a healthy proportion of protein, fat and carbohydrate, the right types of fats, and a suitable energy intake.

Conditions treated include:

  • Overweight and obesity.
  • Diabetes.
  • Cardiovascular disease.
  • Cancer.
  • Malnutrition and weight loss.
  • Gastrointestinal disease.
  • Renal disease.
  • Eating disorders.
  • Antenatal and postnatal.
  • Paediatrics.
  • Sports.
